UNICEF Inclusive Education program

Amway and the United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have joined together to join their efforts to ensure equal education and development rights for all children regardless of their health status.
The goal of this program is to raise awareness of the need for inclusive education, support the existing inclusive schools and to organize much needed new inclusive education schools.. We want to make sure that every child has the right to grow up in a family environment and in conditions that ensure respect, self-realization and active participation in social life. We believe that through this program we can ensure that these children take an active part in a community life which, in turn, helps to change the existing attitude towards disabled children.
There are over 600,000 disabled children in Russia, the majority of them either isolated in their homes or segregated in special institutions. Nearly 50% of these children are getting no education at all, and none are being prepared for life in their community. Many have no community contact beyond family members.
Disability continues to be poorly diagnosed and often goes untreated. It becomes a life sentence of lasting disadvantage. Schools are not ready to accept these children. Most teachers have little or no understanding of disability issues or information about how to include disabled children, there is little or no accessible transportation, parents of children with disabilities have little knowledge about how to defend the rights of their children. Lacking proper support from the state and with limited access to quality basic social services for treatment and care of their children, parents of disabled children often find themselves devastated and see institutionalization as the only viable alternative.
