Daughter and Father at Amway Malaysia Happy Healthy Minds

Happy Healthy Minds Camp, Kuala Lumpar

“I made several new friends today, but more importantly I learned the importance of working together to complete group activities successfully.” This sentiment was expressed by a child participating in the Happy, Healthy Minds camp at the National Science Centre in Kuala Lumpar organized and sponsored by Amway Malaysia. The camp is part of the company’s long term commitment to promote positive mental health in children under its One by One campaign.

Open to the public and the Thalassaemia Association of Malaysia (TAM), 111 children between the ages of eight and twelve, along with 86 parents, attended the camp.

Paul Yee, Amway’s General Manager said: “The One by One Campaign provides us an opportunity to help raise happier healthier children by helping them create a positive mindset and equipping them with basic social skills. This allows the children the capability to deal with social and stressful issues adequately and corresponds with our commitment to helping children lead healthy and meaningful lives.”

“I’m happy to impart that since its launch in February last year, Amway’s One by One Campaign has impacted more than 650 children and 1700 parents. We aim to continue to reach out to many children and parents as possible,” Yee continued.

During the camp, the children were taken on a guided tour around the National Science Centre followed by various team games aimed at building teamwork, enhancing the children’s social skills, encouraging creativity as well as developing interaction, listening and communication skills.

While the children were engaged in their activities, parents were treated to a talk by Dr. Teoh Hsien-Jin, a leading Consultant Clinical Psychologist, entitled “Raising Happy Children.” Aimed at fostering child-parent communication and empowering parents with skills to raise happier children, Dr. Teoh provided parents with tips on encouraging positive behavior in children.

Parents were also encouraged to share their parenting experiences with each other during impromptu role-play and Q&A sessions. It was an eye opening experience, most parents soon realized that their problems were not unique, and by swapping ideas and tips, they learned how to cope best with their growing children and their needs.

At the end of the camp, the children received a special certificate of participation. The camp’s activities were facilitated by 14 Amway corporate staff and distributor volunteers and a team of clinical and developmental psychologists led by Dr. Teoh Hsien- Jin.
