Konishiki Christmas Party, Tokyo

On Dec. 14, 2003, AJL opened its doors to 200 children from children centers in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba. Many of the children were from abusive homes and had no place to go for the Christmas holidays.
Laulima (Cooperation) – Planning the party took a lot of cooperation from AJL, Konishiki, and a non-profit organization that specializes in abused children. Konishiki, known not only for his sumo wrestling skills, but also for his support of children’s programs, hosted the Christmas party.
Originally from Hawaii, but now a Japanese citizen, Konishiki felt that a Hawaiian theme would be a fun addition to the holiday celebration. The program for the party consisted of an opening ceremony, hula dancing, ukulele practice, and concluded with decorating a large Christmas tree.
Everyone enjoyed the Hawaiian food that was served from Konishiki’s restaurant. AJL worked with Konishiki in planning the event and opened the doors of its Headquarters for the party. AJL employees helped support the event, and many dressed up in Santa costumes.
Makana (Gift) – Konishiki and AJL gave each child a small gift during the party. In addition, all of the children that attended the party will receive a Christmas card from Konishiki until they turn 18.
