Jogjakarta recovery program, Yogyakarta
Through Amway’s global One by One campaign, Amway Indonesia has participated in the Jogjakarta recovery program following the earthquake disaster on May 27, 2006. Through this program, Amway Indonesia assists in rebuilding elementary school buildings damaged in the earthquake, SD Negeri Sompok and SD Negeri Kedung Miri, in the Bantul region of Yogyakarta. The company will also provide school supplies to the students to ensure that they not only have a place to learn, but the tools they need to study. The One by One Campaign is designed to improve the well being of children around the world, and Amway Indonesia saw a chance to make a difference in the aftermath of the earthquake. “The educational progress made in Yogyakarta has stalled due to the earthquake. As a company committed to the welfare of the children in our community, it is incumbent upon us to help restore the infrastructure our children need to learn,” said Koen Verheyen, President Director of Amway Indonesia.
Amway Indonesia is focusing their efforts on rebuilding SD Negeri Sompok and SD Negeri Kedung Miri in the Bantul district. “This district is home to many corn farmers, who are raw material suppliers for the shortening product UKMWAY, which is distributed by Amway Indonesia. This program will be continued in other districts as needed,” said Koen.
The school rebuilding effort is part of Amway Indonesia’s ongoing program to bring relief to the victims of the Yogyakarta and Central Java earthquake. Victim assistance projects began three days after the earthquake, providing personal care products for victims in the Bantul and Klaten districts. Amway Indonesia Independent Business Owners residing in Yogyakarta also served as volunteers after the quake.
